Henry's Freedom Box

Slavery
3rd grade and up
This was a great book to read around the time of Martin Luther King Jr day. I spent a little time visiting with the kids about what was happening at the time Dr. King was alive and then I talk about going back to the 1800's and what was going on there with slavery and how kids would feel about being "owned" and taken away from their parents and families never to see them again, then I read the book. After I finished reading I asked them what took place just that week (President Obama being sworn in) and how he is black and just tie it all in with how far we have come.
The kids were silent while I read and I even had some of the classes clap, it was a nice read.
Hope this will help for next year.
