In honor of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, Martin Luther King Day and the inauguration of our first African-American president, we devoted two weeks to reading about civil rights heroes. We did a pair and share with "More Than Anything Else" by Marie Bradby, "Richard Wright and the Library Card" by William Miller, and "Promises to Keep" by Sharon Robinson to talk about how learning to read changes people's lives, and also about how Jackie Robinson changed sports history. We also did a pair and share with "Henry's Freedom Box" by Ellen Levine and "Rebels Against Slavery" by Patricia and Frederick McKissack to discuss slaves who went to great lengths to free others as well as themselves.
