We read the Librarian of Basra to 3-6 grade students.
I started out by telling the students that "Our story today is non fiction." This is a good time to review from curriculum lessons where non fiction can be found, along with dewey numbers, and what non fiction means. I shared with them the number of books we have in our library collection and told them to remember that number as we read the story. At the end of the story we compare how many books Alia from Iraq had to save from the war. Students realize just how many books are in Alia's home and the homes of her friends until a new library can be built. This is great story to teach us about how people suffer in wars and also to remind us just how fortunate we are.
